Leap year causes panic at the bank.
Two arrested for stealing.
And finally ESTA VATO LOCO gets elected.
After twenty years of running for office our own ESTA VATO LOCO got his dream come true when he was elected the official dog and cat catcher for the county and city. ESTA VATO LOCO told a crowd of folks “ I am very proud to have been elected and I promise not to drink nor smoke during working hours and I promise que every cat and dog will be treated fairly. Alright vato.
Two vatos and several dogs were hauled off to jail on charges of stealing and lying to the cops. It seems that these two vatos didn’t think que anyone was going to notice them dress like nuns inside a liquor store, not buying anything but just walking around. Once the clerk in the liquor store noticed the two nuns seemed a bit fatter than when they walked in, decided to ask them if they needed any help. Well one of the vatos got a bit nervous and dropped a bottle of wine. The clerk called the cops and was detain for awhile until they realized que they weren’t real nuns. Charges will be filed.
And finally,Yesterday a ton of barrio folks stood in line thinking que the world was coming to an end when they realized their government checks were being held on day back. Its un-American, its plan communist, its Obama’s fail and so on where some of the concerns folks had about their checks not in their banking accounts. Many didn’t realize que this month had 29 days and not just 28 days like before. After a few beers given out and a few chips all the folks there were happy and move on to better things.

And finally election day today.
El constable and county officials are keeping an eye on todays elections. There are a hand full of elected positions that need to be filed and we are hoping que the hood shows up to vote. The following are up for grabs: county and city dog catcher. County and barrio tax collector. Barrio justice of the peace pct. 1. Good luck to our good friend ESTA VATO LOCO.
Yesterday a bunch of tejanos and few others showed up for fun day at the mall. The idea behind fun day is persons are allowed to dress in their better tejano wear and get a giant discount of 10 percent off everything at the mall. The only problem is that the mall merchants set up their booths outside the mall. After several inches of rain, thunders, and a beautiful rainbow the sale went on. The mall manager was not available for comments.
 AND  finally, After ten tons of complaints the federal, state, county and local law dogs came down hard on el comparde Luis Mata, mc, md, sp. Well, he  was arrested yesterday afternoon for practicing medicine without a licenses. It seems that Mata had created a medicine or shall I say a miracle drug that would eliminate that turkey neck look ( the skin that hangs under your neck). This medicine was nothing but a cream that folks use for hemorrhoids. Once a person applied it to their neck, they  had  to make sure they use it every day of the week. The only problem was once you ran out of it; the skin kind of came back and made a person look like an older turkey and the skin hanged a little bit longer, like around you’ll chest. Charges are pending.

San Antonio ZOO. Hi Santa Cecilia, la que te canta, con on the road again interviews. This week our creator has send us back to san anto for a real treat. That is we will have a chance to interview the man with the golden lens, and a key eye, Lefty Ray, guiding and photography services. Well enough of that and let’s get to that interview.

Sc; hi Righty, can you help me off this bicycle Lefty Ray?
LR: Yes, I can, but we are in Texas and just like a horse you get off on the left side, not the right side.

Sc; gee it’s been awhile since I have visited the zoo, Mr. LR, tell us how did this all come about in establishing yourself as a tejano photographer?
LF: Overall I have been a photographer for over 40 years. I was used to shooting live action of any kind, sports, wildlife, etc. When I moved to San Antonio in the 80’s, shooting live Tejano events were just a natural expansion.

SC: I am sure that tejano stars and events is just one of many of your main topic, but what other areas do you specialize in?
LR: My business is like a 3 legged stool. Outdoor photography/writing and being a fishing guide constitute the 2 other legs. Two day ago I attended the Texas Outdoor Writers Association (TOWA) annual conference and won multiple awards in photography and writing with the highlight being 1st place in photography. Being recognized by your peers is chilling.

SC: Lf what is it with still images that captures your attention?
LF: It is the intersection of time, emotion, action, location, and light.

SC: what are some of your favorite pictures you have taken that come to mind?
LF: Two happened in the same photo shoot with the subject being Ruben Ramos for a past CD shoot. The first one occurred when my main light became unplugged and I took the photo which ended up with Ruben being illuminated by my two side lights, creating a sort of silhouette. That image ended up on the back cover of the “Revolutionized” CD. The other involved the end of the shoot. I said, “We are done,” and Ruben spread his hands out and looked up to the sky. Luckily I had my finger on the trigger and snapped that one. That image became the inside of the 4 panel. Both can be seem here, www.leftyray.com/revolutionized/

SC: if you were to look back into the many photos your archives has, what have you noticed in some of your early images compared to the present ones, in the areas such as producing, style, and technical foundations?
LF: No recording artist has the perfect face or body. For example Mick Jagger does not have the prettiest face and Luciano Pavarotti does not have the slimmest of figures. Over the years I have improved in the manner of making people look better. There is no manual for doing this, just little tips and tricks I have picked up or developed on my own.

SC: wow what do you think you could do for me, well anyhow, is there a natural instinct in your style of picture taking?
LF: I look for emotion. A lot of the Tejano performers have signature moves on stage whether they realize it or not. By recognizing their moves I can anticipate when the turn, when they smile, etc.

SC: did you have a Kodak brownie camera when you were a kid?
LF: Yes, but it belonged to my mom.
Sc: I am sure you often heard people say I took a picture, and in most cases that is exactly what we have done, what do you think a pictures represents?
LF: A slice of life.

SC: what is in the future for Left Ray and in your own vision of tejano music as an art?
LF: I would at some time like to have a gallery show of my top Tejano images. Tejano music is an art and an art, I hope, does not end up being a 30 minute radio show on NPR.

Sc: has the internet ruin lots of film companies, in other words, is film a thing of the past?
LF: Film is dead. Kodak, the mother of photography just filed Chapter 11 and became the butt of several jokes at Sunday night’s Oscars telecast. The event has been held at the Kodak Theater, but a Federal court allowed Kodak out of their naming rights contract to the theater, so Billy Crystal made several jokes about it and it is now referred to as the Hollywood theater even though the Kodak name is still on the front façade.

SC: has your photography won you any awards?
LF: Apart from what I mentioned above, I have won numerous TOWA’s over the years and at the TOWA banquet on Saturday night, I finally got to meet Joe Nick Patoski. Joe Nick wrote the biography on Selena and on his blog in 2007 called me, “The Premiere photographer of Tejano music.” I am also the credited photographer on 2 Grammy winning CD’s and a dozen Grammy nominated CD’s. While people who assisted with the production of a CD project do not get an actual Grammy, we do get a very nice Grammy certificate of which two are proudly hanging on the wall in my home.

SC: if given a chance to speak with a group of young people interested in being a professional photographer, what encouraging words would you tell them?
LF: 1st: Practice, practice, practice. Sports figures and bands practice all of the time to get it right. With practice you cannot help by becoming better. 2nd: Experiment, try different things. When I buy a new camera, I practice for several months so I know what the camera can do and more importantly cannot do.

SC: you know lefty, I am kind of a big woman, (300lbs, hot shorts, and gogo boots) would I make a good model?

LF: Every person has internal beauty. It is my job to bring that out in an image.

SC: and finally sir, what do you want to say to your worldwide fans?
LF: Worldwide indeed. When I check the stats on my website, I can see the different countries that have clicked on www.leftyray.com. It is amazing. To them I hope I can continue to produce the best dam Tejano images on the planet. After all it is quality, not quantity.

SC: (smiling) well Lefty I have to move on and sir can you give me a hand back on this bicycle and point south to me?
LF: From here at the zoo head towards the Tower of Americas and keep going.

SC: now tell are Tejanos the most talented people in the world? I am Santa Cecilia la que te canta. Good day.

Yesterday the senior citizen center reminded barrio members that are still filing their income tax for 2011 that the center still have several seniors not claimed this year were waiting just for you. Come on by an pick a senior and file.

Yesterday at the tenth annual barrio model show the return of hot shorts for big women made a big splash this year. It seems they thought of putting a swimming pool in the middle of the walkway would look cool. Well it did look cool that’s if you looked hot!! And that is what happen con la commadre Maria Zamora, was modeling a pair of hot pink shorts, with tall blue and white go go boots, with a large black belt with a giant buckle, tripped on the rug and fell into the small pool. It took los vato loco volunteer firefighters several minutes to get la commadre out of the small pool. La commadre was not injuried but those hot shorts got wet and started to reduce in size. A large curtain was torn down to cover la commadre who looked as she was wearing a barrio tong. No charges will be filed.

Yesterday evening a small riot was started after several gay tejanos made up of aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters, primos, primas, and a few characters were asked to leave the TWO TONS OF FUN TAVERN, a barrio gay bar after their favorite actor didn’t win the main award. Some started throwing bottles and cupcakes at the giant 12 inch TV at the bar. That is when Big Joe mama, bar owner, asked them to leave the place. So the furious crowd packed their things and took their complaint outside the bar and blocked the main drag for several hours until the program had ended. No arrested were made but something dress like a movie start was hauled off.

Somewhere along the river walk, SA, texas, hello raza I am santa Cecilia la que te canta con our on the road again interviews. This week our three wheel bicycle takes us to the san anto meet up con JR Ramos del grupo Maldad. Let’s get to it

Sc: hell JR como esta, can you give me a hand of this bicycle, wow this river looks deep?

JR: I'm doing good. And it’s not as deep as you think.

SC: thank you for taking time to do this interview ?

JR: thanks for making the trip out here!

SC: el Grupo Maldad is the 2nd generation san anto own los aguilares, can you give us a little background on how maldad started?

JR: well, after a couple of years that I moved to Houston, I wanted to put a band together out here. I really didn't have any luck finding musicians so I called my good friend Santos. He and I always had a pact that one day we would do something of our own. Santos is the son of Emilio Aguilar de Los Aguilares, and at the time when I was playing accordion with Los Aguilares, Santos was on percussion. We were then lucky enough to get a hold of Marco Jaime, who was one of the original singers for Rodeo, and everything fell into place from then on.

SC: how difficult is it to stay on top of la onda tejana when you guys have been nominated for a list of tejano awards?

JR: it’s very difficult. There is so much talent out there right now. But we just keep doing what we do best and try to give the people what they want to hear.

SC; when preparing for a dance, how does a group select its music for each set?

JR: it all depends where we are playing. In one city, they might like more polkas; in another city, they might like more cumbias or country. While we are playing on stage, we read the people and what they like more, and try to give them that.

SC: I listen to a cut from your official website “ tu Nuevo querer, who wrote and did the arrangements on that song?

JR: that song is an old recording by David Lee Garza y Los Musicales back when Ram was with them. We heard it and knew we could do something with it. We changed up the music a little, and even brought in Ram to record it with us. He and Marco did a great job on the vocals.

SC; is it more difficult to do your own original music than to play other tejano artist material?

JR: I believe so. But as a band, I think that is something you really need to do. Of course, you always have to keep the traditional cover songs part of your set because people love to hear them.

SC: how demanding is it on a band when on the road, with family members and one’s health?

JR: it’s very demanding. There are times that we miss out on our babies birthday celebrations, anniversaries, baptisms, Christmas, New Years, Thanksgiving, etc. Its hard leaving the family, especially around special occasions, but its part of our job. And its always good to have such understanding families.

SC: what is in the future for Grupo Maldad?

JR: more gigs, more cds, and hopefully, more fans; Con el favor de Dios! Also, this year, we have more out-of-state gigs in Illinois, Idaho, Arizons, Washington, and New Mexico. And of course, as always, we are all around Texas.

SC: I am sure we have fond memories of being in the music for sometime, is there one event that stands out above the others?

JR: not really. We make the best of each gig whether there are 10, 100, or 1000 people. And of course, us being brothers, we have an awesome time together. Joking around and laughing all weekend long. And to me, that's the main thing; no matter how many memories we have from the past, we always make sure we make new ones.

SC: what is your opinion on the future of la onda tejana?

JR: I think tejano is making a huge comeback. With all the talent in the industry right now, whether veterans, or new bands, there's no way to go, but up. And as long as we have the support from all tejano fans,(buying albums, supporting live events, etc.), we will continue to grow. Not just speaking on behalf of Maldad, but all tejano acts.

SC; if given the chance to speak with a group of young musicians what encouraging words would you use ?

JR: Practice; learn as much as you can and master your craft. Even after you master it, you will always learn something new.
Be true to who you are and never try to be someone your not.
And always stay humble. Never forget who helped you get to where you are. Your fans, friends, and of course, family.

SC: and finally, JR is there anything that you would like to share with your fan base around the world?

JR: of course. On behalf of myself and all the guys, we really do appreciate all the support you have given us. Like I say at every show, "without you, the fans, we are nobody." Thank you from the bottom of our heart and may GOD bless each and every one of you.

SC: well big guy, its time for me to hit the road, can you give me a hand back on this bicycle and point south for me?

JR: no problem. Thank you very much. But before you leave, make sure you stop by Marcos' restaurant, Sam and Djs, for a nice, big, juicy burger. Have a safe trip!!!

Now that market report que you can’t wait for:
Just for the record, here is the listed of the markets we are now monitoring for 2012:
Las empanadas
Los taquitos
Los tamales
Las flour tortillas by the dozen
La Baracoa by the pound
And finally cheap beer

Well after posting that Barrio economic development study results for first quarter of 2012 things have been happening here real quickly. First of all the barrio stock market was closed this passed Tuesday due to the fact que we wanted to see what esta David Duran had to say about the status of our hood. Well after reading his non scientific study we found out que there sure is lots of poor people in our hood.

Las empanadas had no major impact con esta study y do not foresee any increase on price for the end of this quarter of the year. Remain stable at .59 cents each. We will never ever again see them at four for a dollar.
Los taquitos did get some kind of of reaction out of this study. We kind of determined que if more people got up a bit earlier they wouldn’t have to buy taquitos in the morning. But since many do work and have some kind of money it really makes no differences. Los taquitos remained stable at $1.25 each and coffee is not included. But we can say que taquitos are a better buy in larger city where it is reported que they go for two for $1.25.

Los tamales went back to $5.00 a dozen which is the same price it was last year at this same time. We do not see any increase in the horizon until Easter sometime. Barrio tamale brokers are still waiting to see what Manuel Gonzales is going to do about buying out all the small restaurants in the hood.

Las tortillas de flour remain stable at .89 cents a dozen to $1.20 a dozen all depending on the name brand you buy/ we recommend que you pay a bit more for better quality. Oh yea.

La barbaco is still at $6.50 a lb. Con very little fat on it. It is very important que you say that. If not puro fat y no meat.

And finally last night we broke the ice and bought beer a quarter more than we use to. But we had several reasons but that is another story. Cheap beer stables at $3.65 a six pack.

Kingsville, TX. Hello again, my name is Daniel Lopez, the creator. As I step out of my lonely darkened bad room I am here to announce our 2012 person of the year. This person will join a very impressive group of persons that have been honored by our award. Such as, Linde Escobar, J.V. Villanueva, Joe Lopez, God father of brown soul Crazy Chuy Hernandez and Jay Perez.

 The criteria we used were based on their continuous input into la onda tejana. The ability to withstand criticism on issue one believes in and being able to tolerate all kind of positive and negative remarks based on their stands. In addition being able to provide ideas either good or bad and understanding that many might not go along. Yet this person kept it coming and even as we speak this person strives to do something positive for la onda tejana.

The decision I made took many hours of reviewing postings after posting and reading personal emails I received. It is our honor today February 24, 2012 to announce our person of the year goes to ROBERT CHAVER, AKA TEJANO GUY.

WE HOPE THAT YOU ACCEPT OUR AWARD AND WE LOVE YOU MAN.
