Cchwnn: exclusive interview con El ONDAMAN. 03242006Hello once again raza como estan, I am Bill Diaz con an exclusive interview we conducted a few days ago in New Mexico con a Tejano Fanatic, named El Ondaman. A few days ago on our way back from cyber space we decided to stop in the New Mexico, the land of enchantment. If you ever want to see the most beautiful sunset, visit the state of New Mexico. Man oh man it?s a site to see. Our visit con El ondaman lets us discover lots of things that many of us just didn?t know about him. Con todo esto here is our interview. Somewhere along the border of Texas and New Mexico.
Bd: hello Mr. ondaman how is we today, and I just want to thank you for allowing us to visit with you and conduct this interview: Ondaman: hello there Mr. Diaz. BTW, we're situated much more towards the border of Arizona con New Mexico. Gracias for the interview. When I saw your old ford station wagon I said mira esos locos. What are they smoking in that pipa? Luego I recognized that it was the cchwnn crew.
Bd: that?that’s great, ondaman, no wonder it seemed like a long way over here. Lets start right off con your dialog with another poster named Albert. It seems que sometimes you have gotten into some real heavy debate issues, would you want to comment on this?
Ondaman: Well, Albert's a good guy, but I don't agree with all of the comments he's made. Tejano is a small market compared to Norteño, but the thing is that Tejano music grows on you and once it does you just can't stop having enough. As for Norteño music you tend to get bored of it fast. The only thing Norteño is good for is when you wanna go drinking with your buddies y quieres get drunk and party. And even then we tend to get bored of it and the rest of the night it's Puro Tejano Jams and English jams blaring from the speakers. This all in my opinion of course.
Bd: being raised in new mexico, would you say que the music you listen to was a bit different then what it is in texas?
Ondaman: There are similarities in the New Mexico music and Tejano music. The difference is that the New Mexico music beat is way too fast for my liking and a little too off-beat. Also, the vocalists here don't hold a candle to Tejano music's top vocalists. There's potential singers/bands, but they need to work at it here.
Bd: I see that you live in el paso, texas, as a Texan, how did you get so involved con la onda tejana?
Ondaman: Well the first time I lived in El Paso I was still in elementary school and would hear it on KBNA when my parents had the station playing in the car. I was too young and not into the music, but when we lived there in 1993 I was already in High School and some of the first bands that caught my attention were La Sombra, Shelly Lares, Mazz, Ram Herrera, La Mafia, Little Joe, Los Fabulosos Cuatro, Selena, Culturas, Fama, Laura Canales, Pio Treviño y Majic, David Lee Garza y Los Musicales, Fandango USA, etc. From then forward I have never stopped buying all this great Tejas style of music.
Bd:wow those are some heavy folks there. In your observation from the different postings on la onda tejana, what direction do you think que La onda is headed? Ondaman: That is a difficult question. As a Tejano music listener, I would like to say I see nothing but good things for Tejano music's future, but as a realist, unless we get more promotion for the music we love, Tejano music is at a standstill. Tejano music has a vast amount of potential, but many people don't promote it. Yes, we have the internet and online radio and all of these tools have greatly helped our onda. We are in a better state than what we were seven years ago, but we need more than just online, since not all Tejanos have the internet. Musicwise, I think Tejano music is getting better and better. That magic of the 80's needs to be sprinkled on today's recordings also. Get some great producers and arrangers, because there are many bands with potential. Also, the fans NEED to support by hearing Tejano radio in their cars or at work, buy the CD's with your favorite artists and songs, and attend Tejano events and concerts. We fans can make a major positive difference.
Bd: if you were in charge of present music business, what changes would you make in terms of la onda tejana ? exposure, marketing,etc?.if any ? Ondaman: Marketing for sure. Promote Tejano music as much as I could. Get people to know Tejano music. Make it their first choice in any music selection. Definitely make sure that the real Tejano stations get each and every artists demos. Make sure that the stations and DJ's have an email address where the artists can email their songs for airplay. I would also make sure the CD's were stocked in every Wal-Mart across the nation and also every Music shop in every Mall across the country. Make sure every mom & pop store was well stocked. BTW, I would put a new single in rotation every four months. I hear singles off of artists new CD's and that's the only song, from the whole CD, and they'll play it for almost 10 months.
Bd: what are some of your plans for this 2006 tejano year? Ondaman: Keep buying Tejano music and making others aware of the great CD's coming out. Also making sure that the radio DJ contacts I know, are playing the new music from both upcoming artists AND also established artists.
Bd: well sir it has been a pleasure spending sometime with you sir, is there any final words you would want to share us? Ondaman: Just to keep nuestra onda going and do not let anyone bring us down in our efforts. Diosito es muy grande and he will help us keep nuestra musica going. Thank you very much and let me get in my truck and help jumpstart your 1975 Ford Cadillac whatever. LOL.
Bd: thanks you sir.and that was a 1979 whatever ford, man that’s funny, lol.Well raza I think we did accomplish what we had set ourselves off to do, and that was get closer to our friend el ondaman. Many many times we read postings from different folks but we really never get real close to them and see where they are coming from. In this case, thanks el ondaman. I am bill Diaz.
